Reading Every Day, at School and at Home

Every day, children take home a book from our library.

“One of the things we appreciate most about Columbia Academy is its emphasis on daily reading. Our child has become a much more confident reader and now enjoys reading independently at home. We believe this daily practice has made a real difference in both vocabulary and comprehension.”

On Stage and Speaking Up

Students give a monthly charity performance and perform at a local seniors’ home.

“Our child used to be quite shy, but we have noticed a wonderful improvement in confidence. Columbia Academy gives students many opportunities to perform, speak, and participate in group activities. Performing at seniors' residences has been especially meaningful. These experiences teach children courage, kindness, and the joy of bringing happiness to others.”

Study Habits

Homework and reading every day, and homework support every morning from 8:00 to 8:45.

“We have seen tremendous improvement in our child's academic performance since joining Columbia Academy. The daily homework and reading routines have helped develop strong study habits. The teachers closely monitor each student's progress and provide additional support whenever needed. We are very pleased with the school's academic expectations.”

— Parent

“The morning homework support is incredibly helpful for our family. If our child has difficulty understanding an assignment, there is an opportunity to receive additional guidance at school. It takes pressure off parents while teaching children to become responsible for their own learning. We really appreciate this thoughtful support.”

— Parent

“Since joining Columbia Academy, our child has become more organized and independent. The daily homework expectations and consistent school routines have helped develop responsibility and time-management skills. Teachers encourage students to take ownership of their work and behaviour. We can see these positive changes at home as well.”

Teachers and the Principal

Each class has a homeroom teacher. Families can talk with the teacher every day at classroom pick-up, and bring further concerns to the principal.

“The teachers at Columbia Academy are passionate about teaching and genuinely care about their students. They take the time to explain concepts, encourage improvement, and help children overcome challenges. Our child feels comfortable asking questions and looks forward to going to school. We couldn't ask for a more supportive learning environment.”

— Parent

“We are very impressed by how much the principal cares about the students. Even small concerns are taken seriously, and we feel that our child's well-being is always a priority. It is reassuring to know that school leadership is so approachable and attentive. This personal attention makes Columbia Academy special.”

— Parent

“We appreciate the close communication between the school and parents. Teachers and the principal are approachable and responsive whenever we have questions or concerns. We feel informed about our child's progress, behaviour, and school activities. It gives us confidence that we are working together to support our child's development.”

Small Classes and Character

Classes have no more than 15 students.

“The small class sizes are one of the main reasons we chose Columbia Academy. Teachers know their students well and can identify their individual strengths and areas for improvement. Our child receives attention that would be difficult to provide in a much larger classroom. We feel that our child is truly seen and supported.”

— Parent

“We appreciate that Columbia Academy focuses not only on academics but also on character development. Teachers patiently guide students when they make mistakes and help them understand how to make better choices. Children are given opportunities to reflect, improve, and grow rather than simply being criticized. This approach has helped our child become more responsible and mature.”

— Parent

“What we value most about Columbia Academy is its focus on developing the whole child. Academic achievement is important, but so are kindness, confidence, creativity, and good behaviour. Through daily learning, music, arts, performances, and community activities, our child is growing in many different ways. We are very happy with this balanced approach to education.”

A Working Family's Day

Drop-off is from 8:00 a.m., and after-school care for Kindergarten to Grade 3 runs until 5:30 p.m. Hot lunch is available every day and is charged separately.

“As working parents, we truly appreciate the school's flexible schedule. Being able to drop off our child at 8:00 a.m. and pick them up as late as 5:30 p.m. makes our daily routine much easier. We can focus on our work knowing our child is in a safe and supportive environment. It is a huge benefit for busy families.”

— Parent

“The after-school program is a major benefit for our family. Our child has opportunities to participate in enjoyable activities while we finish our workday. We appreciate that the school offers a convenient pick-up time until 5:30 p.m. It makes balancing family life and work much less stressful.”

— Parent

“The hot lunch program has been a wonderful convenience for our family. We no longer have to rush every morning to prepare lunch, and our child enjoys a fresh, warm meal at school. The online ordering system allows us to choose different meals throughout the week. It is one of those small things that makes a big difference for working parents.”

Beyond the Classroom

Students take part in events at BC Place twice a year. Every student volunteers: a charity sale, litter clean-ups and performances at a local seniors’ home.

“One of the unique things about Columbia Academy is the opportunity for students to participate in activities at BC Place. Our child was so excited to experience such a special venue. These opportunities make school life memorable and encourage children to stay active. We appreciate how the school uses the amazing resources available in downtown Vancouver.”

— Parent

“We are grateful that Columbia Academy teaches children the importance of helping others from a young age. Through school charity sales and community activities, our child has learned about generosity and teamwork. These experiences help students understand that their actions can make a positive difference. It is a valuable part of their education.”

— Parent

“As the school year comes to a close and we prepare to return home, we just wanted to express our gratitude for the last 8 months. Our son has grown so much in his time at CA and we are sure that he will treasure the memories he made here. Thank you for treating each of your students as individuals and recognising them for their uniqueness. He has experienced so much warmth, kindness and generosity from his teachers and friends. Thank you for being so attentive in your day-to-day interactions, he feels very seen and heard. From the origami-folding, to the bead craft-making and pizza baking at after school, to the magic show he got to perform — we’re sure he will remember these for the years to come. In equal measure, he has also enjoyed the music and French lessons with his teacher and ELA lessons with his English teacher. CA has really opened his world (your school library is fantastic and the excursions are great — we got to enjoy breakfast made by our son over the weekend after he attended the ‘cooking’ session with Choices Market).

“So thank you so much for the good work you do, impacting all these young lives.”

— Parent

New to Canada

Families who are new to Canada can start any time in the school year, if a seat is available. Children who are still learning English get free ESL support every morning.

“Thank you so much for all the help and support you have given to my child. I know this has taken a great deal of your time and energy, and I truly don’t know how to express my gratitude.

“I have been in Canada for over a year, and it is because of you that I have felt a warmth and strength I have never experienced before. Your support has given me great confidence, and I truly believe that my child will be able to go through a new and positive transformation.

“Once again, thank you sincerely for everything you have done and for your continued support.”
